Puppy Nursery

We have been working super hard on building a private nursery area for our girls to birth and raise their puppies in. We can’t wait to show you the finished product. It will have two private whelping pens that lead to outdoor runs so our mamas can get a break whenever they need :)

Outside Play Time

Here at Amos and Oak Doodles we feel one of the most important things for our dogs is outside play time. Australian Shepehrds especially crave exercise. While Moses is most happy chilling on the couch, Ruby much prefers to spend her time running around outside. If you get an Aussiedoodle, whether its from us or not, it’s very important to evaluate your puppies individual needs and do what is best for them. We have had puppies born here that need constant exercise and then we’ve had puppies who, just like their dad, would prefer to sleep in a quiet place. We allow our adult dogs free range of the yard a couple times a week and we also have structured playtime. Usually that’s a game of fetch or “catch the frisbee”. For young puppies and dogs - outside free time, a game of fetch and on leash walks across all sorts of terrain, especially uneven ground with grass or dirt, are best. If you are having trouble with your puppy focusing when training or being destructive, a lot of the time it stems from a lack of exercise. When you have moments of frustration, take a break, take your puppy outside and exercise him for a bit. A lot of times, that makes all the difference.

Delivery Day!

The puppies are going home this weekend! Almost everyone gets to go to their new homes before Christmas. I know this is going to be the best Christmas ever for a couple of these families :) Delivery day is the hardest, yet most exciting day for us. We LOVE to watch new families meet their puppies for the first time and how excited the puppies are to meet them! Soooo many puppy kisses to go around. Rodney and I are looking forward to watching these guys grow up, we can’t wait to get updates about how they’re doing with their forever families. Every time a litter goes home it’s like our family grows that much more. Keep us and the pups in your thoughts and prayers for safety and NO car sickness as we head out on our travels.

Charlie Brown - Always the Last

Good news, good news!! Charlie found a home! All our puppies officially have a family to love for Christmas. Thank you everyone!

Ok guys, I need someone to explain to me how in the world Charlie Brown has not found a home yet?? have you seen this guys face? He’s got personalty to spare! He’s such a spunky little fellow with lots of love to give. He is coat tested and will be extremely low to non-shedding. Charlie will great for families who have allergies to dog hair. He will come home with a puppy pack full of toys, a blanket, his favorite treats, and a sample bag of his current food! He’s working on a proper sit and how to ask for attention politely. I know the family that gets this guy will be the luckiest of all. Charlie is priced at 1300.00.

Charlie Brown and Snoopy

We have two sweet males left. Charlie Brown and Snoopy. Charlie is a sweet, laid back chubby fellow and Snoopy is the feisty runt of the litter! Both of their coats tested F/IC and SD/sd which means they will have the typical doodle face and be EXTREMELY low to non shedding. Let me know if you’re interested in bringing one of these fellows home!

Puppy Picks!

All of the families on our waiting list have made their decisions! We only have two puppies left available for homes now. Charlie Brown and Snoopy, go figure - haha. It was exceptionally warm yesterday so we took the puppies outside to have their weekly photos taken. I love every season as it comes, but for some reason this year I’m really wishing for warmer weather. Come on spring! In four weeks all the puppies will be ready to go home. Our house will be so quiet.. I won’t know what to do with myself! This week in Puppy Culture (the program we raise our dogs with) the puppies will start learning how to ask for attention in an appropriate manner by sitting and waiting to be petted as opposed to whining and jumping. Wish us luck!!

be sure to check out our “Available Puppies” page to see the updated photos.

Litter Update

Phew, goodness! I am falling behind on keeping up with this blog here. between the kids and the puppies I keep pretty darn busy. The sweet puppies are growing and changing so fast! They’re 3 weeks old now and all of them have their eyes open and are walking around. Ruby has started the weaning process which means we get to introduce solid food to them next week! Oh, I bet they’ll love that! This period in their life starts the critical socialization period. We are handling them multiples times a day and letting them wander the house. We are also taking them out one at a time to spend one on one time with each of them. This not only helps them bond to humans but it also helps them to cope with being separated from their siblings so it won’t be as scary once they go to their new homes. Taking their pictures is getting harder and harder! Our last litter was born in the summer so we had the benefit of being able to take them outside for some good photos. Unfortunately its way to cold to do that this time, but we’ll make do and try to provide you with the best and cutest pics possible . I updated the “Available Puppies” page with new photos, you’ll have to go check it out.

The Puppies Are Here!!

IMG_3923.jpeg

Oh. My. Lands. Guys.. look at these sweet puppies! Ruby birthed 8 babies yesterday morning/afternoon. Rodney checked her temp before he left for work and noticed it was at 97.5. When a female is getting ready to whelp her temp will drop. A normal temp for a pregnant female is 99-101. We knew then that she was ready to go within less than 24 hours. I was nervous because I’ve never delivered puppies on my own! Even though I knew Ruby was totally capable of doing everything on her own, I was still freaking out a little. It was all for nought though. The labor went flawlessly and all the puppies came out strong and healthy. I’m so proud of Ruby, she did amazing. Now the work begins…

It's Getting Close!

Goodness, canine pregnancies move so fast! Ruby has around 31 days left in her pregnancy. Rodney and I are busy making lists of items we need to have on hand and preparing the whelping area. We are also mentally preparing - raising puppies is a huge under taking! Especially when they’re raised in your home and all up in your daily business... haha!. I think we might be more excited for this litter than we were for the last litter, if that’s even possible! I’m dying to see how many we have, what colors they are and to watch their little personalities develop. Everyday brings something new. Puppies develop at an incredible rate! I mean, just think about it - they go from being completely dependent on their mothers to living on their own in a new home in just 8 extremely short weeks! It’s absolutely mind boggling to me.

We recently took all our pups out for some updated “headshots”, you should have seen Rodney dancing, flailing his arms, and yelling to get the dogs attention. It was definetly comical.

Finding a Responsible Dog Breeder

We want to educate people in their search for the perfect companion. When you go out on the internet and start looking for a puppy, keep this list in mind. If the breeder doesn’t meet the criteria listed here I would be leery of buying a puppy from them.

Breeding dogs are friendly and don’t shy away from visitors

Their dogs are not kept in over crowded spaces, they have plenty of room for exercise and get daily interaction with the family/breeder.

May not always have puppies available but keeps a waiting list of interested potential buyers.

Meets psychological and physical needs of their dogs by providing toys and enrichment items.

Has a strong relationship with their vet. Allows you to contact their vet.

Really knows their breed and is willing to educate and guide potential puppy families.

Has references from previous puppy families.

Knows their parent dogs personalities and each puppies’ personality.

Health tests their dogs.

Not all breeders these days allow visitors on their property for their families’, breeding dogs and puppies’ protection, but they should at least be willing FaceTime or video chat with you.

Willing to take puppy back if family is no longer able to keep the puppy.

A responsible dog breeder will sometimes want to ask you questions about your situation, why you want a puppy, what you’re looking for in a puppy.

Will have a contract and or health guarantee that protects you, the breeder and the puppy.

Amelia The Animal Whisperer

This child of mine is completely obsessed with animals. I honestly believe she was born with a strong connection to them. She is so gentle with them too. If our dogs are laying on the floor she’ll get down on their level and gently hold their faces while speaking softly to them ( she can’t actually talk yet because she’s only one and half, but she jabbers her best) We took them to the fair the other night and Amelia just could not wait to walk down the barn aisles. she wanted to stop at every cow, sheep, and goat, hold their faces, if they would allow, and talk to them. I imagine she was telling them how amazing and adorable they were and probably asking them if they wanted to come home with her to live forever - haha - a girl after my own heart definitely.

Moses The Good Boy

Our beloved Moses has started the path to becoming a therapy dog! We have to complete 12 weeks of beginner and advanced obedience and then he will take the Canine Good Citizen test, if he passes he can then start the process to be certified as a therapy dog! We are so excited for him. He has such a calm demeanor and is happy to just lay by your side and be petted all day long.

About Our Name

Somebody asked me yesterday where we came up with our name “Amos and Oak” so I thought I would post the explanation here for anyone else wondering.

Before our town was known by its current name it was called “Amos Territory”. On our property we have the foundation of the original post office, the foundation of the general store and our barn was the black smith shop. We wanted to honor the history this ground holds by naming our kennel after it. The “Oak” part of our name comes from the two giant oak trees that stand on either side of the black smith shop.

Ruby Sure Can Run!

We don’t post many posed photos of Ruby because she is such a challenge to get to stand still! She would much rather be running laps around the house or chasing the frisbee. She has finally mastered catching the frisbee mid air! I will have to try and catch it on video on elf these days.

Creek Day!

Moses absolutely ADORES the water! Anytime we go anywhere near water, he’s in. No questions asked! We spent the evening at Kelly’s Slab yesterday. We had a picnic and caught minnows and crawdads. Moses spent his time romping through the water and greeting every person who floated up on a kayak.

Sleep Sweet Baby

All of the puppies have done so well with traveling. We have been very impressed. they mostly ride on my lap while Rodney drives. I think riding in the front seat really helps with car sickness. The last puppy we delivered decided to ride the last hour in Rodneys lap, she climbed over there and promptly fell asleep. Mouth open and everything Lol!
