Coat Testing - Understanding Doodle Shedding and Non Shedding

We test all our puppies through PawPrints Genetics for the Shedding Allele, IC and F locus. Understanding this can be confusing, so I am going to try and break it down for you.

All of our F1 Doodles will test IC/F (improper coat / furnishings). All the poodles in our program test F/F, meaning “furnishings”. The term "furnishings" refers to the longer mustache and eyebrows seen in dogs with wire hair, as well as other breeds like the Poodle or Airedale Terrier. Aussies on the other hand don’t have furnishings. They only carry IC/IC. Meaning they have a smooth face with no Mustache or eyebrows. Because F1 Aussiedoodles are a 50/50 mix of Poodle and Aussie they will all test IC/F. the Furnishings gene is dominate so you only need one copy for it to express. The furnishing gene can be weak though, which is why doodles have such a variety in their coat types. Two puppies from the same parents can look totally different. (see pictures below)

The Shedding Allele is closely related to the Furnishings gene. SD - meaning shedding, and sd -meaning non shedding. There are also different types of the shedding gene, some mean the dog will shed heavily seasonally and others mean they’ll shed all of the time or not much at all. It can all get pretty complicated, I’m trying my best to keep it simple while still explaining the important things. No matter which shedding allele your puppy has if they also have the furnishing gene they tend to be light shedders. Our poodle studs are SD/sd Whereas some of our Aussie mamas are SD/SD and some are SD/sd . Our F1 puppies test IC/F SD/SD, IC/F SD/sd and IC/F sd/sd. Below is a chart to help you understand what this means in terms of our F1’s and F1b’s shedding.

The lines highlighted in grey are the types of coats our dogs won’t ever produce.This is not an exhaustive chart. The strength of the furnishings and the amount of curl also play into how much each puppy will shed as an adult.
